Here are some tips for economical and efficient use of your steno machine ribbon cartridge.
Then what does a court reporting student practise when only the tops of your letters print on the paper of one's Stenograph machine? It's probably one of ii things. If it'southward simply a letter here and in that location, the private central contact switch may demand to be adjusted. I never seem to accept my owners manual on me when this needs to be done, so follow the directions at this link to for a refresher class on which way to turn the allen wrench.
A good way to recall that is with this footling ditty: "Righty tighty, leftie loosie." --gdw
If all the letters impress partially or are only press actually lightly, you probably need to re-ink your ribbon.
"Re-ink your ribbon?"
That'south right. I said it. You don't need to keep buying $24 ink cartridges every time you lot start not being able to read the letters on your steno newspaper. All you demand is a canteen of steno car ink like the one pictured below which can be found at numerous online court reporting supply stores for around $x or nether.
Steno Ink: $x.00
If you lot look at where the red arrow is pointing in the picture show below --
Ribbon cartridge
-- in that location's a trivial sponge next to the cycle where you can put a few drops of ink at a time and so wait for information technology to absorb. Put the tip of a pen or similar tool in the pigsty indicated by the green pointer and spin the wheel around several times to piece of work the ink into the ribbon. You may need to repeat the procedure to get your letters to show upwards again, but just err on the side of circumspection ... and voila, a money-saving solution that all steno students tin can do good from as long as your car uses a Stenograph ink cartridge.
My local steno repair ninja does something similar -- except he uses a drill to spin that trivial wheel! Every bit you might guess, that seems to piece of work improve than the 9 or 10 turns I ordinarily requite my ribbon with my pen ....
Also, should you exist unfortunate enough to discover this article *only* later on y'all plunked down your $21.00 for a new one, it says somewhere on Stenograph'south site that you demand to whip that bike around a few times to get the ink flowing. This, of grade, is another little tidbit I discovered a wee fleck too tardily .... the sacrifices I brand for youse guys --!
